Rmueller9
I have an opportunity to buy this, but I do not possess expertise on identification of old Italian violins. I would appreciate all the help I can get on this. The source of the instrument is highly credible, but as we know, this is always a subject of uncertainty. As Rod Serling would say, “Submitted for your approval”! Please ask for any other data. I thank you before hand!! Rich

Rmueller9
Prior to working with Strad and Guarneri, his designs were probably more along the Amati line,

Michael Appleman
Bergonzi's earliest recognized work shows a lot of Ruggieri influence, and it seems the research has shown he got his start most likeley through Vincenzo Ruggieri. This violin looks nice, but more of a southern german style than any Bergonzi I've seen in person or in photos. Bergonzi did let in his linings with points, not square, but his interior work seems to have been mostly in willow.

C or early 19th C. Austria or South Bohemia. It would be a considerable restoration project, amongst all else with a back post crack, and a replacement peg box. I certainly wouldn’t buy it, and if I would be given it for nothing, would put it on my “do later” shelf.

Either way it’s latin and perhaps indicative of this being an italian build of some nature.
jacobsaunders
It is surely of highly tangential interest, what it says on any bogus label, it might as well say “Ant. Strad, fetch it omnipontum” The parchment (or paper) strips on the centre joints of these violins were re-cycled from some random book. I even had one once which told you what to feed your cattle

I even had one once which told you what to feed your cattle While that may be the label and it’s age and the way it’s glued on seems to show some real age… but those have been antiqued before. I don’t see any parchment paper for the words on the liner, perhaps you can elaborate? The words seem to be stamped to the liner before it was installed, when you look at the ‘P…’ the letters seem to be stamped or show deep type. Look a little closer…
