IMHO, they're tweaking the forum software settings again.  I wish they'd leave well-enough alone.

Of course, there's always the possibility of yet another Windows Degrade.  Some of Microsoft's stuff has been less ready-for-prime-time than usual lately.

I can no longer browse without logging in first. Is this the same for everybody else ?

On the other hand if we click on the "Online Users" box at the top it shows numerous "guests" who presumably are not registered users browsing content. How are they doing that ?

Yes for me, too. It took me a while to figure that out a few days ago, since I don't necessarily log in unless I'm posting.

I've seen two separate issues arise over the last few days.

  1. The entire site has been inaccessible at times, as established by interrogating it, and analyzing the code returned.  That's a connectivity problem, and often simply means that a server is undergoing maintenance (such as an operating system patch, or whatever).  I recommend that most users employ free online services like http://www.websitedown.info/maestronet.com to check connectivity.
  2. The login issue, along with some other difficulties which I noticed (relating to content uploads), is most likely caused by the forum admin changing some of the Invision suite settings in an attempt to manage some problem they perceive with spam, storage or bandwidth impacts, user behavior, or whatever has them concerned at the moment.  Finding a proper balance of settings to get a forum to run the way that you want it to is complicated, because a lot of trade-offs are involved.
