Choux
Hi experts, Would you please give a look at these three cellos? If one can manage to pay for either of three, which would you recommend? I was told that the first cello is from France (First three pictures). The price of this one is rather moderate compared with the other two cellos: 7,500 USD (not 75,000USD). The second (4th, 5th and 6th pictures) and third cellos (7th and 8th pictures) are far more expensive. The prices are about 50,000 - 60,000 USD. I was told that one was made in Germany and the other (perhaps the third one? I am not sure) in Italy. Are the prices exorbitant or appropriate? If it is too expensive, how much do you think is appropriate? Unfortunately, the certificate is not available. I am not wealthy enough to buy an expensive cello. But if it is worth the price, I can cut down on my spending for the coming years. So which would you recommend? I am considering buying the second or third cellos. But the first cello has a fine sound. So I just ask your advice if the cello is worth to have regardless of whether I choose the second or third ones. Thank you in advance for sharing your expertise. (You can enlarge the photo.) 1. French (7,500 USD) 2. Either German or Italian (50,000 - 60,000 USD) 3. Italian (?) (50,000 - 60,000 USD).. I am not sure which one is Italian between the second and third. Edited June 29, 2021 by Choux

Choux
Thank you for your answer. I enlarged the pictures and uploaded them again. Unfortunately, they are only available pictures right now. Just a quick glance and a brief assessment would be greatly appreciated. Thank you. martin swan
Reading your description and looking at the instruments, I don't believe you are in safe hands. You need to find a reliable and respected dealer who knows what they are selling and who will charge a fair price.

Link the original offerings so we can better see what's happening here. Nobody's going to buy them out from under you. Buy a good, reasonably priced, Chinese cello to practice on while you locate something better from a brick-and-mortar dealer where you can play the cellos first. jacobsaunders
All 3 celli, judging by the superficial pictures, seem to come from Markneukirchen weather you listen to Martin or not
Alma
Choux, None of them. Do you have a cello now? How did you choose it?
PhilipKT
The cellos, especially the second one seem damaged, and for $7500 you can find a good solid excellent condition instrument with some history.

Choux
Thank you for all of your answers. Now I understand enough that those are not worth to buy at the price. Then can any of you assess the price and the identity of those cellos? According to Jacobsaunders, they are all German instruments.. right? The first one seems not in a bad condition. Doesn't it? and I like its sound. If I like its sound and want to have it, how much do you think is appropriate for its price? And the other two ones.. if I really like one of them, how much can I suggest (If the seller is willing to listen to my opinion borrowed from you.) Brumcello
I dont think anyone on Maestronet will give you a figure for the value of these cellos. If Jacob Saunders says they are German that is probably what they are. I am a cellist not a maker, dealer or expert but they seem vastly overpriced to me. It might help to know which part of the world you are in as that will affect your choices. Also, you have a cello, what do you know about it and why are you looking to replace it? Dave Slight
The cellos seem misrepresented, and overpriced, you need to find a safer avenue to procure a cello. Even if the seller agrees to reduce the price, how will this make you feel? The cello still won’t be what you think it is. The main determining factors in an instruments value are who/where/when it was made, and the condition. From there, a fair market price can be established, but it looks in this case that someone just guessed!
Alma
Choux has written: "I have a cello which I bought from a decent shop with the help of a professional cellist." That sounds like an intelligent course to follow again...n'est-ce pas?
