Hopefully somebody recognizes the signature of this maker. Looked up cursive German 19th C letters and have some of it figured out. Origin of violin would help of course. Jacob Saunders, Blank Face, anyone have you seen this si gnature before or can you read it? I dont think this violin had never been opened. The date below the signature is 1834. first name Josef? Any help would be appreciated. Ppointy linings into elongated corner blocks, inside mould.

I would assume Josef Sailer, but it's difficult to be sure. There was a large number of Sailers in Mittenwald, one Josef Sailer is mentioned from the mid 18th century, but he can't have made this fiddle. But the tradition within this families would have implied to give the boys the name of the grandfather or grand-grandfather anyway.

Thank you so very much.
