Only 28 lots -  What's going on ! ?

Been like that ever since Brexit. They have been putting way more lots into Berlin now. I think London is almost just a placeholder auction to show that they are still doing business here. Obviously they still get a lot of high level lots still.

Yes, and unless you have a high end instrument you'd be lucky to even get a decent appraisal !

Yes and they just want you to ship anything you have to the US anyway without any guarantee.

Luckily there are multiple other options if you want to sell in the UK. I feel sorry for people in the US though as they don't have many other options at the moment.

Yes you're right but the 28 lots are described as a "catalog preview" of the London sale, whatever that means.

I think by preview they mean that you can't bid yet. Some people rush in to bid because they can get that extra 2% off the buyers premium by being the first to bid and then winning. I would be surprised if they add extra lots to this sale, but you never know.

I'm not sure this T2 behaviour is so unusual.

If a dealer or violin shop owner  went to the viewing, it would be quite reasonable to place bids on multiple items at a price where the items would be worth having.

Then you can go fishing or sit by your logburner reading "The Strad", and at the end of the auction you find out what you have bought, if anything.

Most professional buyers don't get caught up in auction excitement. If they get something for the right price that's fine, if it goes too high then they wouldn't want it at that price so what's the problem ...

I used to love the thrill of live auctions, reading the room, strategising, psyching out the other bidder, forcing the auctioneer's hand down, but internet auctions hand the balance of power to the auction house, and they just last SO LONG ...

I understand what you're saying and I understand the logic in doing this, but some people seem to take it to the extreme and it seems unnecessary. Yes of course it's fine if there is a genuine intention to buy something, but I would question if someone was genuinely interested in buying 90 violins in one auction. To me this just seems like odd behaviour and possible price bumping.

Just my thoughts of course.....

I don't have any experience with in person bidding, but I can understand that this would have been / is exciting for some.

I really like online auctions (obviously), but I find bidding in them quite stressful and irritating. I do sometimes buy things at auction, but I much prefer to buy things from people for a set price which both parties are happy with. For that reason I tend to focus more on private based purchases.

First Irish auction I found with a a fair amount of instruments. (About 57)

(IRELAND) Sheppard's  October 27th (2022) - Musical Instruments - https://www.sheppards.ie/search/MUSICAL-INSTRUMENTS/1 - https://www.sheppards.ie/search/MUSICIAL-INSTRUMENTS/1

Thank you Shelbow. I wonder how good these guys are. They have posted a violin as an Italian instrument and when I read the description the label says' Nicolas Bertholini'  :D

Yes I mentioned this it my video I did a few hours ago . They also mislabelled some of the lots and switched some around.

Interesting auction though. Some high level contemporary guitars in it.

For which public do you make your auction “Videos”? Do you ever call anything anything else that “interesting” or “nice choice of wood” etc.? Not much sex & drugs & rock & roll is there, or should I have listened to the end?:)

I just make them for myself really and upload them. Sometimes I might say more, it depends really. Interesting and nice wood is common though  Maybe on the more specialist auctions I might say more. I think you have to be pretty bored to sit through them anyway. More like background ramblings.
