Shelbow- It would be nice if you can also add a three line commentary on the auction. This is supposedly a 4 decade long collection and contains every big violin makers name and is presented as labelled with a 10 pound estimate. Was the collector duped for 4 decades or is this some sort of mystery where there is a likelihood that something here might be authentic ?

Part 1 looks more like it came from a hoarder than a collector. There does not seem to be any focus nor curation to this "collection."

Not all. A few items are listed as authentic, but most are not. Some have higher estimates than £10 - 20.

It will be interesting to see if there are any interesting bidding wars on any of the individual items.

Thanks George. Not being in the UK does not allow me the convenience to check them in person. For the instruments that have a higher estimate of 1000+ some are still listed as labelled example Lot 124. So in this case for Lot 124, does the auctioneer believe it may be authentic but not sure and does not want the buyer to end up getting a real deal cheaply ?

I would agree with George that this is a collector in the loosest sense of the word (much like myself), who probably just picked stuff up here and there if the price was good. Ultimately if you pick up enough things over a long period of time some might be half decent.

In some cases if an auctioneer is unsure about an attribution they will be deliberately cautious in regards to what they title the lot and also the estimate they provide. I feel this is the sensible and honest thing to do. Amati are quite neutral in this regard and they let the potential buyer work it out for themselves. Some other auction houses are quite keen to present Mutton as Lamb.

It doesn't necessarily mean the low estimate items are worthless, more that it's a highly speculative lot and you need to do your research. In regards to lot 124, the auctioneer is simply stating it is a violin labelled Francesco Mantegazza, nothing more than that. The higher estimate could be a request from the consignee or a belief of the auctioneer that regardless of attribution this is a higher quality of instrument and therefore deserving of a higher estimate. If people want to believe it is a Mantegazza based on a label, then that is up to them. The sensible thing would be to do some research, look at the construction / style etc etc all the usual bits and make your own decision based on that.

@Yogic I plan to view this auction in person for my YT channel. If you want videos of any of the instruments just let me know.

Most items are listed "labeled" or "branded," but a few are listed as "by." The ones listed as "by" are presumably offered as authentic works by Amati.

Presumably they have a glossary somewhere on their web site, exactly what “by” is supposed to mean, and to what extent they accept liability for “by”, or to what extent a purchase is final. James might like to point this part of his web site out. I for one would have sympathy with him should he wish to establish a certain limit to liability, since there are enough instruments which one can always argue about, and probability and certainty are two different things.
