What is the opinion on the instruments in mehlis ? Many look suspect to me with the wood, varnish and label not very representative of the makers it has listed.

Their stuff is either trade instruments, decent german made individual work or stuff that is very speculative. It's usually not very interesting, but I include it in the list anyway as occasionally they have a few interesting bits. I would approach any of their lots with caution.

Not sure who organised the lot listings, but that is crackers...

Lot 1: violin by Guarneri del Gesu, estimate €4-4.5 million.

Lot 2: 3/4 size Mirecourt violin, estimate €50-80.

 Hard to get further apart in terms of quality and price, maybe they did it for a laugh.

It's not a terrible idea to put a throwaway lot right after a marquee item at auction - if you go to a lot of sales, you'll notice that the lot immediately after something newsworthy will often underperform. Now that most auctions are as internet-driven as they are, it's not as dramatic, but 15-20 years ago, I started making a habit of figuring these "next lots" because they so frequently fell through the cracks.

As a pattern, visiting the "next lots" were where it was possible to make a purchase. There is a type of psychological and monetary momentum that occur at big sales. Pricing can peak to crazy levels; the items might be better. It could also be that the "big fish" don't care what the minnows do. They pass when items are of nominal interest. The Houses make money, regardless.

Also at the lower end lots, there was more time and thus opportunities to examine items. I think the conversations are also more interesting at these lots. I have missed "opportunities" at the lower end online auctions as my commitment level is far more casual. Not knowing who one bids against ( like at a site like eBay ) makes the encounter, or the experience, less appetizing. That sounds stupid, and superficial, but that's me.

I wonder why the owner didn’t avail themselves of the Bein & Fushi buyback guarantee?

The cert. sent with Bein & Fushi's invoice says "we will net to you on a consignment basis the price you paid".  That falls short of buyback, and may be worth little if Bein and Fushi were to cease to be comfortable vouching for the item's authenticity?

The certificate seems to have either disappeared or never been issued. Perhaps the buyer did not pay the invoice in full. :D

I don’t see any exclusions along the lines of “in the event that the instrument turn out not to be genuine”

Were any dealers dendro checking violins at this time (c1999), or was it still a bit too early?

I see some of John Tophams research papers go back to at least 1998 (I assume there is earlier research as well).

If that Strad they sold me a couple of years ago turns out to be German, it reassuring to know they undertake to pay me the net proceeds of a consignment sale.

I come here for the fun of reading about the violin trade with astonished wonderment. In the past few years I have bought two violins, three wood bows and a cheap CF bow. The only slight disappointment was the bow by a maker who was no longer alive (Nurnberger).
