Laberte & Magnie Violin - Jt Derazey

I am currently trialing some different instruments from my local Luthier.  One that I’ve got right now is a French violin dated 1924 by Jt Derazey of Laberte and Magnie.  From my research, it seems that this violin was not actually made by Jt Derazey but rather the shop purchased the rights to the label?  I haven’t seen the papers yet, but it seems the violin is certified from somewhere per my luthier.

It’s a beautiful instrument.  The low end of it has a way of being a very deep, earthy tone.  The E doesn’t sign quite as much as I would like but I also believe it’s got a set of dead strings on it right now.

Strangely enough, I believe I’ve seen some people mention that they weren’t a fan of French violins but haven’t been about to find the threads again.  I’m curious as to thoughts on this violin and it’s maker!

  • LilHobbit changed the title to Laberte & Magnie Violin - Jt Derazey

Hello LilHobbit, I also have a Laberte "Derazey". I can thoroughly recommend them, the sound and response on mine is outstanding, very full and smooth. I enjoy the youthfulness and openness of the "French" sound. Like the violin in your photo, mine also has on Evah Pirazzi Gold strings which are an excellent fit. (I switched to the green ones to experiment, but the sound was much better with the golds.)

Thanks for the info!  This is one of my two finalist violins at the moment.  I’ve already order a set of Evah Golds for whichever violin I end up purchasing!
