CaseyLouque Posted March 26, 2021 Report Posted March 26, 2021 Has anyone used the Lee Valley Hot hide glue warmer and Pot? The pot seems fantastic and an upgrade from my glass jars. At around $40 i might take the plunge.
Rue Posted March 26, 2021 Report Posted March 26, 2021 I have the two of them!!! Too cute. But...I have never used either the glue pot nor the mug warmer...so I am of no help. They make an adorable decoration...maybe one day I'll get around to dusting them off and actually putting them to use.
David Burgess Posted March 26, 2021 Report Posted March 26, 2021 Automatic temperature control is a handy feature, which this doesn't appear to have.

I expect it has it, but since it's not specified it probably reflects "recommended drinking temperature" which some sources have at 130-160 Fahrenheit, and my guess would be this thing hovers widely at the low end of the scale.
Urban Luthier Posted March 26, 2021 Report Posted March 26, 2021 I have one and it works flawlessly. Just keep an eye on the glue temperature with a heat probe. Looks nice too!

I'm letting the wood age, (er, indefinitely, ) so when I build it I know it will sound great! As soon as it's in its final stages, I'll ring you up!

The steaks ill be cooking with it not so much. I've got a spare digital thermometer with an alarm hanging around anyways should make it easy to not overheat.
nathan slobodkin Posted March 27, 2021 Report Posted March 27, 2021 Hold-Heat glue pots from Chicago have been the standard in the USA for as long as I can remember. I hope they are still available because I am now finding a lot of my tools are getting to the end of their lives and I would hate to have to get used to another.
Don Noon Posted March 27, 2021 Report Posted March 27, 2021 I have had a Hold-Heet for over 30 years. It still works, but I don't use it any more. Now I use a wax warmer with adjustable temperature. It has a smaller pot and heats up more quickly. And for the price of a new Hold-Heet, I can buy 6 of these.
Urban Luthier Posted March 27, 2021 Report Posted March 27, 2021 To accelerate warming with the Lee valley pot mentioned above - I just use boiled water in the double boiler and let it cool for a few min before i put on the warming plate. Since the LV pot is quite thick, i can bring it up to a constant temp in a few min this way.
John Preston Posted March 28, 2021 Report Posted March 28, 2021 I have been using the Veritas pot for a number of years. I like it a lot. I did not buy the warmer, however,so I cannot comment on that. I drilled a small hole in the center of the lid so a thermometer can be inserted. (yes, I actually use a thermometer!
Oded Kishony Posted March 29, 2021 Report Posted March 29, 2021 I use a baby bottle warmer with adjustable temp. They automatically shut off if they run out of water and a recycling feature that returns the bath water to the pot so it doesn’t evaporate too fast. Keep it on warm then crank it up when you need it. you can often pick these up at yard sales etc.
Strad O Various Jr. Posted March 29, 2021 Report Posted March 29, 2021 I use a gas stove with a small pot and the glue in baby food jars, it just so happens that the lowest heat setting comes out right about 140F, much simpler and heats up in 5-10min
not telling Posted March 31, 2021 Report Posted March 31, 2021 I think these are stylish and more interesting than the Lee Valley model: http://mshepherdpiano.com/antique-piano-tools/glue-pots/ There are still thousands of beautiful and historical glue pots available for around $50 or less. I know, that's probably not everyone's thing.
