I've seen scrolls by one or two people on here who let the machine do practically all of the work, and they are bad, worse than a human who'd read a book would do. Probably the CNC could be tuned up to do an artistic job, but they're satisfied with the result they have is the problem. It's a problem of poor artistic taste; bad cutting by computer replacing bad cutting by hand.

It is certainly not a good idea to let the machine do everything to the end. The best way using CNC is to get your neck block roughed out and finish everything by hand. I know some makers doing scrolls like this. Regardless, there is also a completely different approach possible where the design of the scroll is adopted to how the machine works. This is similar to modern design products and the result wouldn’t be anything like a classical scroll.

This is what Im trying to do but am having trouble getting the CNC design and CAM working correctly.
Urban Luthier
@Don Noondoes a very fine job of using CAM with traditional hand work as did our late colleague @Michael_Molnar. Telling machines to do what you want them to and actually getting them to do it right, is not easy.
