I bought an old violin… and with it came this case… I am curious if anybody could help me out with the markings on the top of the case…possible era ..etc.. it would give me a rough idea of how old my instrument is…?? not out to become a billionaire…lol i also have this hard tooI looks like bone in it..?? I am just a curious sort… thanks in advance. Dave
Wood Butcher Posted February 23, 2021 Report Posted February 23, 2021 What you think is a tool, is actually a home made tailpiece for a violin.
FiddleDoug Posted February 23, 2021 Report Posted February 23, 2021 The case is usually not related to the violin. If you want any reasonable chance of identifying the where or when of a violin, you should post a series of high quality pictures following the guidelines at the top of the page. https://maestronet.com/forum/index.php?/topic/333119-how-to-photograph-an-instrument-for-identifcation-purposes/
Three13 Posted February 23, 2021 Report Posted February 23, 2021 The marks on the top are remnants of a handle.
Ron1 Posted February 24, 2021 Report Posted February 24, 2021 Appears as though the handle may have have been moved.
