christian bayon
Ferras played the Stradivari "le President" and, after, until his tragic death, the "Milanollo" He was our client at Vatelot and I remember this very sad day when the violin came in the workshop after he committed suicide. Ratcliffiddles
The one-piece back violin he plays on the op's picture is the "President" Stradivari, and it is not painted flames.. Also it is likely to be from c.1725 ( it can't be 1721..)

Usually it si a sign of a lower quality instrument, but not always. Had a small Landolfi with painted flames in the shop a couple years ago... That would be very sad. Do you happen to know where "le president "ended up? Or why he switched to the "Milanollo"?

I did read 1721 correctly though. Why can't that be accurate?

Rue
Of course! Wasn't thinking! (Again). Now you'll just have to go into all the old references, with a bit of whiteout, and change the year!

No, when I met him, he was already playing on the Milanollo, great sounding instruments, like most of the 1727 period (Kreutzer, Reynier.......) Vatelot liked very much the President, but I never saw it.
Rue
Thanks! I wonder why some of these Strads aren't currently in a list. Did they finally fall apart and no one wanted to own up to it?
