David Burgess Posted February 17, 2021 Report Posted February 17, 2021 I hope people in the US are being very careful about humidity, with the unusually cold temperatures we are having. Where I live, the indoor humidity would be 3% right now (despite the outdoor humidity being 78%), if I were not adding moisture. During most ordinary winter months, I can get by with using one steam vaporizer. Currently, I am using two, and they are running about 85% of the time to keep my shop humidity up to 40%.

I'm running three right now! I'm less a luthier than a moisture farmer at the moment. Part of the problem is I have to humidify the whole house in order to keep the shop where it needs to be.

I had to clear my driveway of snow.... in San Antonio. No snow blower, not even a teflon coated snow shovel..just an old rusted dirt shovel. Never planned on that.

And on the topic at hand, I have an evaporative pass through humidifier on my furnace that has been doing a good job with only minor maintenance and annual pad replacement.

The street snow plow came by this morning at high speed, and filled my sidewalk and driveway entrance back up with heavy, highly compacted snow.

I forgot about that un-fun aspect of living in the city. I’m the local plow driver, so mine gets taken care of right away.

That might work, if she was just typing text. How does that work out for complex spreadsheets, and modifying client-sourced data bases? But you're right, I could bring her a fresh bowl of warm water every 15 minutes to soak her hands in. WTF, I already bring her coffee in bed almost every morning.

You don't live in Michigan... Was -8 F where I live this morning... Inside humidity without humidifier, even factoring in cooking, watering plants, and a morning shower, would be way less than ideal.

What about Finns should we be careful too. My humidity meter shows 3%

I might bet Finland was in the 20% range or close for PKG but am willing to learn something new everyday too. Yes, I can be wrong sometimes but I just hate being found to be wrong Sir{s}.
JacksonMaberry Posted February 17, 2021 Report Posted February 17, 2021 For a given water vapor content, a decrease in temperature will result in higher relative humidity - hence the "relative". The other variable is dew point. If DB keeps his house around 65°F and is reporting an unmodified RH of 3%, we can easily determine the dew point (-18°). If we keep the dew point the same and plug in the -8° JH reported, we get an outdoor RH of about 61%. Maybe not the 75% DB claimed, but it's in the noise vis a vis your guess of 25%.
