Michael_Molnar
My wife is making plans to visit Paris after the pandemic subsides and wants me to list places to visit. So, in the area of violin making are there are suggestions for places to put on that list?
The Violin Beautiful
For the shops, the Rue de Rome. To see makers, I’d probably go to Montpellier.
Davide Sora
Le Musée de la Musique, an enviable collection of musical instruments, with several Stradivari and also some finds (some forms), and among other violins also the 1742 Alard violin by Del Gesù, probably the best preserved (although not very well exhibited ...). A ne pas manquer!! https://philharmoniedeparis.fr/en/musee-de-la-musique/collection/pathway-through-the-collection https://collectionsdumusee.philharmoniedeparis.fr/cordes-incontournables.aspx https://collectionsdumusee.philharmoniedeparis.fr/doc/MUSEE/0130508 https://collectionsdumusee.philharmoniedeparis.fr/0157816-violon-le-alard-de-guarnerius-del-gesu.aspx You could also ask for an appointment to meet Jean-Philippe Echard, he seems very willing to show "his" collection, as he states here:
David A.T.
The museum bought recently An Amati Cello. The JBV Octobass is also interesting to see. Many things are interesting in fact, and sometimes there are nice events.
Michael_Molnar
Wow. Lots to do. Sans doute Thanks.
Televet
The Octobass is truly splendid and the ability to hear recordings of some of the strange medieval instruments on display is great. I also loved the Marine Trumpet, truly a king amongst stringed instruments. Allow at least a full day for Me Musée
Jul
there are also a bunch of non-violin related stuff to visit in the city.
MANFIO
The Sainte Chapelle.... it is near the Notre Dame.... Don't miss the sculpture Eros and Psichè by Canova in the Louvre.
Davide Sora
Well, there are a bunch of great things to see not related to lutherie, it's Paris!

Davide Sora
I believe the Pompidou Center is closed for a couple of year for renovations (restoration?), but I'm not sure if they have already started.
Tets Kimura
The Pompidou Center will be closed from 2023 for several years.

Stringy
Thanks for that, so the original is at Oxford, have to visit Paris some time to take a look at the later one.
Stephen Fine
Musée d'Orsay no matter what even if you're a museum skeptic. I think it's the greatest art museum in the world. Rue de Rome for the violin shops. They were nice to me just walking in without an appointment with very bad French. I thought the Palais Garnier (home of the Paris opera) was neat. The Conservatoire de Paris has an instrument museum I haven't seen. Usually, I just walk around a lot sampling as many bakeries as possible. Both are original, in Oxford there is the Amati, in Paris there is the Guarneri del Gesù. Both belonged to Alard, which is why they have the same name. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jean-Delphin_Alard

Televet
In pre and hopefully post pandemic times there are regular concerts in Sainte Chapelle. It is the most glorious venue as the sun fades through the stained glass and the music soars.
