 Hi viola d'amore

 How many alligators now?

Welcome back!    It depends on the weather, when it freezes, you won't see any, then a warm sunny day may bring 2 or 3 out.  Come spring, I may get 20 of various sizes wandering around.  :)

just wrote a book called "nice try dale"..seems appropriate to be forgotten already

Certainly looks like an addition for the next edition at this point....  Doesn't this have a lost password feature?

I read the synopsis on Amazon, and thought the book to be quite clever and amusing for someone like me, a preacher's kid who was constantly struggling with nerdism versus coolism, during a time of life when social pressure to conform was so high.

i don't remember checking the value of projection when i made the viola in the 80s... i had already made 2 -4/4 violins...when i made the  15 one half inches or so viola i used info from several sources both commercial and noncommercial...i don't remember whether i might have used the violin projection of 27 by mistake? but once all glued up it was definitely showing a weak angle and when i tried to find a 31 I found the bridge short with resulting poor tone...as a violinist I'm about like a 12 hdcp golfer...I had never attempted a REAL neck reset but 2 NewYork specials worked on violins i was restoring..who knows why i decided to add a tapering shim which still didn't work on my own.

Could it be that if you had mistakenly set the viola neck at 27, then added a shim, it still wasn’t enough to change the projection to 31/32.
So it’s always been a bit low, and hasn’t dropped further?

The string heights might hold the answer.

Oh! Well! That makes it a lot better!

Only some 20, 8" alligators between the front door and the car...

8-inch (8" you typed) are only a problem if they become interested in the cat food, or if visiting kids think they are "cute", and try to pick them up.  Not recommended.  For one thing, if they start to make small, frightened, gator noises, a mamma gator may be nearby.

The 20 would be a maximum, and everything scattered between the "moat" (drainage ditches), and the eastern fenceline toward the river.

Ooooo, nice!   Looks like a gator farm.   Good money in those, but a whale of a lot of work and legal hoops to leap through.  You ever get tired of snow, you might move down here and open one, the little darlings just love goats and chickens.    :)
