No support, to no extent. He criticises my playing, and jokes.. Spend any money on anything to do with violin making, or be doing it for hours?? What for?? 

It's a passion! You can't explain. You either get it or you don't. I have accepted it. I am in love with the violin, I have a relationship with it. He is not part of it, so be it! I enjoy every second of it

So don't get me wrong, it is a very valuable profession. It should cost. It is highly skilled. I doubt I'll get anywhere. But I don't mind pretending for my own enjoyment, to learn about the build of the violin. I'm not here to break anything valuable or anyone's valuables. 

And please stop quoting my words and making fun of them. It's uncool! If you have anything of value or helpful to add, then say it. I am here to learn, that story about that girl cutting the violin bridge for Jacob was a good one.

But the other ones... A bit brainless.. Coming from educated people... 

If I make a mistake, just correct me, if you can't be bothered then keep your thoughts to yourself ;-))

I believe that you'll have the judgement to not mess up anything nice. And if you do, there seems to be quite a throng of contemporary makers cranking out new violins, so I doubt that the world will face a shortage if you mess one up.

So, go for it. Enjoy. YOLO. Just be careful with the sharp tools!

Even a Dutzendarbeit.. As bad as they are can create such nice music. It just amazes me. When I read the other thread about the ebony vs other wood.. Half of it I didn't quite get but it is mind-boggling how much goes into every part of the violin. When they measure the sound, or resonance of the bridge, the top plate. If you think about it.. All these violins, share basically the same properties and yet.. One violin is 10 million dollars, and sings like a lady.. And another well 300 dollar violin sounds like an little old man losing his voice. Everything is so precise. To the naked eye.. One violin next to the other... This just mesmerises me. Much like the human body... But this violin is made out of wood?! I want to understand how it works, why these exact measurements matter.

Hello, if you are in the London area maybe you could consider an evening class at Merton College? I don't think they are too expensive and only take up one evening a week during term times.

I attended evening classes for three years (Guitar making) at what used to be the London College of Furniture, and was at that time called City Poly, many years ago and they were great for learning and for meeting likeminded people. This helped to set me off on the long slow woodworking and instrument making, frequently blundering, meandering adventure that I am still on now and enjoying more than ever.

That is exactly what I'm waiting for. Also there is a workshop in Cambridge that I could go to. After Covid.. 

It's not about the end goal for me.. It is more the process that I will enjoy. 

I do art, I paint, I enjoy the beginning of a painting, every part... It all coming together, each dark layer, contrasting the light.. I work long on my paintings.. I don't mind.. Because every added detail counts.. And so it is with learning... Every page read, every mistake you correct, you make it your business to know why it doesn't work. I like math, chemistry, science, problem solving.. Art and music.. Violin making is fascinating.. 

I absolutely love this forum!! Some people pointed me in the right direction, gave me some great advice! And it's good to joke in such heavy times..sometimes... ;))

I am a reputable ebay seller. Good mid trade violins. Every one has a sound video. All of them are set up by Simon Speed. And I play. Prices a bit below shop prices. No returns. Reviews are all good.

I’m not sure if such self-advertising is in accordance with the Forum rule “not to offer instruments for sale”.

If you are a bit longer around here you might find that a lot of members are selling in EBay or other online markets and those being reputable always restrain from offering themselves here.
