Are you sure? I happened to hear a couple of Italian luthiers also raise doubts about the authenticity of the Cannone, indicating the excessive thickness as too unusual for Del Gesù. What to say, negationism has no limits.

Yeah, but her birth name was Steve. She didn't become Anna until the age of sixteen.
ShadowStrad Posted January 20, 2021 Author Report Posted January 20, 2021 I just came across this. https://www.forbes.com/2001/01/10/0110connguide.html?sh=603594a3269a I found it interesting.

I think you heard wrong... As I said, this has been discussed many times here.

For those who continue to doubt (unlikely anyone here) - I have two simple questions: Have you seen the Ashmolean Messiah? Have you see any of the Vuillaume's supposedly copied from the Messiah? For those who have seen both the answers are simple: one looks like a fine instrument from the Strad workshop - the others look like Vuillames. Yes, he very decidedly proved that a second Strad violin was actually made by Vuillaume... just kidding... please don’t ban me.

I always wondered how Rocca managed to produce Messiah models before Vuillaume supposedly "made the fiddle" (acquired it)... in 1854 if memory serves me.... No, I don't think so Phillip.
Ernee Posted January 20, 2021 Report Posted January 20, 2021 The other question is who made the Lady Blunt? Two peas in a pod.

Not everyone's expertise is equal. When it comes to some instruments, it might take only a couple experts to trump everyone else.
MikeC Posted January 20, 2021 Report Posted January 20, 2021 The PG in the pegbox is Cozio's handwriting (1755 - 1840) but he and Vuillaume (1798 - 1875) were both around at the time. Just a fun factoid.

Oops, I just did. Some things are timeless. I said this in 2011 in another of these discussions. What is scary is that it is almost ten years ago:

Ten years ago I could have bought bitcoin for next to nothing and i'd be rich enough to buy a real Strad now. Hindsight is 2020

Spelman Posted January 20, 2021 Report Posted January 20, 2021 7 hours ago, jacobsaunders said: Vuillaume also “made” a copy of Paganini's “Canone”. The (marketing) yarn was that Paganini couldn’t tell the difference when he came to fetch his fiddle. That copy now lives in the same glass case in the council house in Genua as the “Canone”, so you can tell from across the room for a fact, that Paganini must have had a great big white walking stick I thought that Vuillaume was Hilary Hahn's main fiddle? Does she own a different Cannone copy?

It's quite clear to me that the other violin in the room (attributed to Vuillaume) is the real del Gesu, and the one they call the Cannone is a Vuillaume copy.
