Jane.flf
Hi, I hope someone out there can give me some help. I know nothing about musical instruments and have inherited a violin which I know has been in my family for a long lime. My father is 89 remembers it belonged to his grandfather. It is marked Joseph Guarnerius Fecit, a cross above IHS and Cremonie anno 1724. From what I have read I am not holding out any hope that it is a real Guarnerius but it does look genuinely older than a lot of the 1900's repros I have seen on the internet particularly when you look at the case. Can anyone tell me anything about it and what it might be worth ? Many thanks Jane
scordatura
Sorry it is not a genuine Guarneri. Looks German from the 1900s. The chinrest, gut string, and old case are good indicators of the age.
PhilipKT
Does it have a bow? It might sound worthwhile it’s set up, if it doesn’t have any condition issues. Just because it is a trade violin, doesn’t mean it’s a bad violin. Edited December 23, 2020 by PhilipKT
J.DiLisio
What type of chinrest is that?
Bill Merkel
^I've seen them called kidney chin rests. They were popular a hundred years ago. Maybe one of the first available.
Rue
I call them chin hooks...
J-G
I've heard it called a Spohr design. Combines chin and shoulder rest. Best part is, it stays on the fiddle in the case.
