My Last Fiddle Purchase of 2020*

Recommended Posts

I just wanted to share some photos of the Mittenwald fiddle I bought on Ebay and received yesterday.  The photos in the listing weren't great but I saw enough to know I should get it.  The condition is excellent; no cracks at all, just a few scratches and the oxidized rosin on top.  Even the old coffin case is in good shape.  It came with a super delicate Nippon bow.

*unless something truly amazing comes along in the next 16 days :D

What’s up with the scroll?

and what’s the best way to clean the top?

I think it's a deep scratch on the scroll.  As for cleaning the oxidized rosin off I will have to defer to my friend who will actually do the work on it!  I'm curious about that myself.

A Neuner & Hornsteiner Mittenwald “Verleger” violin, late 19th or early 20th C. I would clean the belly with “super nico” polish and Wiener Kalk

Nice!  Thank you :)  Yeah I'm happy with it!  $225... I spend more than that on wine every week LOL!

Mittenwald “Verleger” violins come in a wide range of qualities (i.e. Stupid question)

Yes, teacher, thank you for your guidance.

However, Neuner & Hornsteiner violins have a good reputation and I was asking if this was a good violin, even if it was a Verleger example.

Just looking at the plain wood, it would appear to be an example of average quality. These violins were often sold in catalogs where they were graded (priced) based on the appearance and quality of the materials used. This would have been a middle-to-lower priced instrument when it was new.

However, it looks to be in fairly good condition, and will likely make a decent student quality instrument.
