CValdez
Hello, everyone. I recently purchased this violin with the intent of resorting it back to playing condition. But, I’m not entirely sure what it is. I was hoping that some of the experts on here might be willing to help me identify its provenance and age.
luthier
It looks like a viola to me, in all probably German, late 19th C. How long is the body or back?
deans
Yes, how long is it? An old through-neck Saxon instrument. Its possible that its a violin somebody really narrowed the neck, it sort of looks that way. But the body also looks like a viola. If its a viola its definitely cool, but possibly a lot of work to make it playable.
jacobsaunders
I would expect that it is something like a Gütter from Markneukirchen, mid 19th C. You will have to make a neck graft as well as all the usual things
