Hi does anybody knows where to buy violin backs, with the outline ready for purfling ?

It is to practice cutting the purfling groove, so : outline should be without too many bumps and a flat of about 1/2 inch

all around ready to scribble on . it is for an old amateur who doesn't want to risk his good wood

thanks in advance

If you're just practicing and have access to a local mill, see if they'll sell you an inexpensive chunk of maple - they may even thickness it for you for a little extra. Bandsaw an outline, smooth it with files, planes, knives, or a sanding drum chucked into a drill press, then purfle away.

This is probably a dumb idea, but what about practicing on cheap unfinished guitar bodies? Maybe you could do put a finish on them and sell them to locals to build up guitars out of them. I think purfling as an alterative to body binding might look pretty cool.

I see these sell for thirty pounds with free shipping on ebay.co.uk
