Varnish Colors and Fittings

I think that it depends upon the red you're talking about. Ebony and blackwood are always a safe bet, and darker boxwood always looks good to me. I have one very dark, almost purple-y red violin that has brighter red cocobolo fittings that look wonderful on it, but I doubt they'd work with a bright red finish. Do you have a picture of the fiddle in question?

But seriously, I am a fan of boxwood. 

George Hart blinged out his del Gesu’s fittings with diamonds back in the day - even had the (wrong) date on the tailpiece...
