vio.lino
What are your recommendations for matching varnish colors and fitting woods? What would you think would look good with red varnishes in particular?
Bill Yacey
Houndstooth is very "in" this season, but what do I know? Ebony, rosewood and boxwood all go nicely with any typical varnish color.
J.DiLisio
As far as red varnishes, I always thought the fittings on the Lady Blunt were perfectly matched. Not sure what kind of wood that is.

Three13
I think that it depends upon the red you're talking about. Ebony and blackwood are always a safe bet, and darker boxwood always looks good to me. I have one very dark, almost purple-y red violin that has brighter red cocobolo fittings that look wonderful on it, but I doubt they'd work with a bright red finish. Do you have a picture of the fiddle in question?

Why not make it solid gold fittings to go with the gold mounted bow? A bit of extra bling bling wouldn't hurt... But seriously, I am a fan of boxwood. George Hart blinged out his del Gesu’s fittings with diamonds back in the day - even had the (wrong) date on the tailpiece...

Mark Norfleet
I would much rather use Eric’s mountain mahogany fittings than boxwood, since properly staining boxwood is a pain in the neck. That said, here’s some useful information. https://www.hansellviolins.com/fittings-info-44-c.asp
