Goffriller
Hi everyone, Does anyone know what programs and setup Amati uses for the 3D rotation of the instruments (or what can be used to get a similar result)? It seems that this tool is very useful now given less people are able to try and inspect the instruments in person because of the pandemic. Thanks! Mike B
The viewer is super simple - here is the code. It literally loads all the photos necessary for a 360 degree view. <div class="spin-photo spritespin-instance with-canvas" id="instrumentSpinner" I don’t think the coding is complicated - the issue is rotating the violin by a controlled amount. This is not a methodology that has been widely adopted, and I can’t imagine us doing so in future. With all due respect to Amati for innovation, I think it’s a bit like sound samples ie. it gives a sense that useful information is being shared without the information actually being useful. TJ Fuss
Somewhere... buried in my basement is a turntable made expressly for these kinds of shots. It has detent notches to provide fixed increments of rotation.

I would make a sort of plexiglass stand. Visibility isn’t an issue IMO, it rather proves that it‘s real and not a computer generated illusion. Or hold it upright with a string at the volute. I've used blobs of wax to hold stuff in place for photographing. There are "positioning" waxes available from jewelry making suppliers but it's rather pricey. I found that a mix of 50% beeswax and 50% toilet sealing wax (use a fresh ring) is firm but pliable and sticky.

TimRobinson
My youngest daughter is an archaeologist and uses Agisoft Metashape for everything from megalithic temples to stone flakes. I've often thought it would be good for violins. https://sketchfab.com/M_Robinson/collections If you saw a recent National Geographic documentary Chasing the equinox the 3D model of the Maltese temple was hers. Yes, I am a commercial photographer with my specific niche serving artists and craftspeople making images for their promotional needs and for their applications to juried shows. This is a second career of 15 years now after 24 years as an engineer with Eastman Kodak. Sadly, things are pretty slow right now because all of the shows were cancelled this year (and next year isn't looking so good either). On the plus side, I have a lot of time now to work on my instrument repair projects! Should anyone care to look, a wide variety of my images may be seen on Flickr at: www.flickr.com/tjfuss/
