bluebonnet
I have a viola without label which has a stamp inside the back. The attached photo shows the stamp. Does anyone know something about the stamp and maker? LOB = 420 mm I bought from a person in Canada some 10 years ago, but I lost the receipt. Pictures of bridge are uploaded. However the stamp on the bridge is hard to read. Edited October 13, 2020 by bluebonnet correction

FiddleDoug
Something says Chinese to me, but I could very well be wrong.
bluebonnet
Thank you very much. It is possible. Although it hasa a crack onthe lower bout on A side near saddle, it looks much cleaner and scarless than expected.

I think that he has a nice Italian viola. You should obtain a formal evaluation from a good shop.
deans
Doesnt look Chinese to me (except maybe the fittings). Looks like its a decent size, C string looks too short, Thomastik sells a variety of longer strings, you might want to look into that. Blank face
Because it's a relative modern viola it could be made everywhere, but with the extended and extremely deeply fluted f wings, high edges and distinctive scroll it reminds me mostly of the Czech style from the 1930s on. Without the stamp I would say a Forberger, but there were also many others working this way. You could search a bit here: https://paganini.cz/en/violins/violins---after-1920/
MarkBouquet
Your photo is too out of focus to read the stamp on the bridge, but I’m wondering what that says. Does the bridge stamp correlate in any way with the inside back stamp?
PhilipKT
Is the varnish very thick? It looks like it may have an extra coat.
Delabo
The stamp maybe a dragon with S & P underneath ?
Rue
Quote I bought from a person in Canada some 10 years ago, but I lost the receipt. I'm sorry he was in Canada then. Why are you sorry? Did something happen in Canada 10 years ago?

But, I expect that somebody else does, and knows exactly what it is. Please speak up.
