AMATEUR CHAMBER MUSIC ASSOCIATION?

Hi All,

Many years ago there was an international organization of musicians with a printed listing of member's instruments, levels of skill, and willingness to invite members into their homes for playing chamber music.  Does this still exist?  Can anyone remind me of the name of it?  Over a few years I had several delightful evenings of quartets with interesting musicians from as far away as England.

If it no longer exists, what a shame that would be; perhaps it could be reformed.

It has morphed a bit from earlier days, but ACMP is still out there.

The Amateur Chamber Music Players has been there all along.  It changed its name to Associated Chamber Music Players partly because it was felt that the word amateur in the title might indicate that professional players weren't welcome, despite the fact that there were always members who were professional level players.  They don't distribute the membership list with playing skill levels on paper but it is available online to members on their web site https://acmp.net/

My father joined ACMP in 1948, about one year after it was founded.

I joined around 1975 to find chamber music players and to provide a local contact for players who visited our isolated desert community. I quit about 10 years later when changes to the telephone-number prefixes put us at the north end of a 240 mile long geographic strip with a major city at the south end (got too many calls from San Diego visitors and none from visitors to our town).

I joined again about 12 years ago (2008) because an ad hoc string quartet I was playing in wanted to hire a coach to prep us for a performance and ACMP supported 50% of a coach's remuneration for each member - so we all 4 joined and had 4 coached sessions (tremendously helpful). I dropped membership again after that because I had more local musician friends in my new local area (SF bay) than I could ever need. But it is a great organization.

The really cool part is if you insure with Anderson Insurance https://www.anderson-group.com/ and are an ACMP member, most of us will save enough to pay for membership, and perhaps then some (depending on policy value).

^that's good, because it means the actuaries at anderson have determined the anonymous strangers you invite into your home to see your fiddle aren't going shoot you and take it.

who said anything about inviting strangers into homes? don't you use tor and serveral VPNs to make picking out the actual address difficult? ooops, no caps, guess we type the same...

Hi everyone,  I am doing a PhD about the Amateur Songwriter and I was very interested to read in an article that the Association polled to change their name quite a few years ago to remove 'amateur' @gowan

do you happen to know when this change of name took place?
