1801 “Joannes” Gagliano?

Recommended Posts

Wouldn’t a real Gagliano be labeled “Giovanni”? Anyway, this is an interesting violin, so I share. Is it interesting? As usual, these are the only auction photos offered.

I sold a fine (and very rare!!) Joannes Gagliano c1790 last year. By chance I have another c1800. Similar to Joseph in quality.

I'm not feeling it with the violin pictured..........

Do you know why the label did not use the Italian version of the name?

Pretty much standard practice for makers of this period to Latinize their first names ...

Januarius Gagliano

Carolus Gagliano

Joannes Gagliano etc

Well considering that Italian is so close to Latin, I actually thought that “Giovanni” would just add an “s” and become “Giovannus” but that’s basically what they did.

what do you think of the fiddle? The color of the varnish looks like my friends Joseph, if I recall correctly.

Can't tell much from the photos, but it looks like it could be a nice English pseudo-Italian for example a Wilkinson ...

But it could also be more recent and more dodgy.

Thank you very much I appreciate it. It will be interesting to see what the real life lookers think about it.

For me it looks like an interesting Neapolitan violin, but from photo's only I could be miles off... I wouldn't bid on it without seeing unless it stays under 1k, which I doubt.

More pictures. The bow is unmarked and the extra photos aren’t very good but don’t show anything interesting. But the violin is interesting although the scroll looks awful. What sayeth the crowd?

Looks like  it was revarnished by Paddington Bear.

The varnish looks like it has been slapped on way too thick. Am I mistaken?

Marmalade, with evidence of claw marks.

Always interesting how different photos can look.

Dean, do you think it’s a nice fiddle? I thought the wood looked nice,  and the color isn’t too far off, although the scroll didn’t look right, and not just because of the varnish, but the varnish looks like it is the consistency of mud and it was just poured onto the scroll.

Actually, Marmelade isn’t an inaccurate comparison.

Do you think it looks ok? I’d love to get your thoughts. I’m not bidding on it, I just thought it looked interesting, and the varnish on the scroll does look bad to my eye, but I would like some educated guidance.

Oh for goodness sake!  Just bid on something already!

Well… If I bid on it, dear heart, will you buy it from me? I will make you a great deal!

Seriously though, my bidding days are long over. These days, I am much more interested in collecting money than  instruments.
