French? bow

Recommended Posts

Take what I say with a huge grain of salt, as I am no expert.  But the brand looks suspiciously like that seen on many bows offered on ebay that are of recent Chinese manufacture, though the frog might be older than the bow proper.  Perhaps one of our more knowledgeable members will chime in.

Looks like a Markneukirchen stick with a German frog from something else, an adjuster with a later added pin and a completely wrong stamp.

The wood doesn't look anything like the Chinese fake "pernambuco" you see so much of.

They don’t fake pernambuco, they use something else entirely.

Correct, I call it fake because they call it Pernambuco

Really? You don’t believe that Chinese bow makers don’t have huge stashes of     Pernambuco?

Yes really. A lot of Chinese bows sold as Pernambuco, are made from a different type of wood, which is not Pernambuco.

I'm sure they do.

If not Pernambuco, what is it then? Is it good for making good bows?

I am not sure what it is. The colour is different, a pinkish brown. The grain is very fine but not like the structure of Pernambuco. Judging by the number where the head comes off, it lacks strength in comparison.

How many of these have you seen? I’ve not had any such problems.  The Chinese bow makers that l have bought from have used the good stuff and probably didn’t have to pay an arm and a leg for it because they know what to look for.

Ipe is interesting. It’s even stiffer than pernambuco but not as pretty.
