jandepora
"retabli" is not the same as restored? Could be the word for the edge doubling of the inside of the top?

With regard to the word "retabli" - it jogged some memory cells and I looked at a violin I own and took this picture through the f hole which seems similar........... it seems to say "retabli par Caufoin Neuchateau 1865" if this is any help with unlocking the mystery word ? This is the same name and city inside the Chappuy viola I mentioned earlier. It does seem to be an old term for repair or restoration. I believe i was mistaken when I wrote earlier about it not being "luthier-speak." It's not something a contemporary french luthier would say, but it does seem to have been used in the 19th century. I do think Frebrunet is a strong possibility. I would recommend contacting Rampal in Paris.
