Shelbow's World of Blasphemy!

Recommended Posts

I think it's very nice looking, but it depends how far down the rabbit hole you want to go (sorry to be the dissenting voice). If you were making an entire instrument, I would say that you still have too much color in the wood. Your "flames" fade and reappear, but they do not move.  The other thing I look for is the illusion of depth. Here's an idea of what I'm talking about from a MN search. This wood isn't even finished yet. Good varnish and application should enhance what you have from well prepared wood.

Hi Jim,

Thanks for the advice I totally understand what you mean. I definitely have some more exploring to do. I'm a way off starting or finishing an instrument but from the video you linked to I totally see what you're saying. I've also seen a few instruments where the flame seems to be inside the middle of the wood moving around, almost like it's trapped in a snow globe. I guess this is the optimum finish people are looking for?

For the moment I might just roll with what I have for the scroll because I need to get back to bows and also start a better scroll, but I completely value your suggestions and will work on this for sure. I think I'm slowly starting to understand things a bit better and hopefully might get there in the future. I have to read over all the notes I've been given and try and take it to the next level. :D

I already started this one so I thought I'd post anyway.

This one is slightly different order of application and revised pigment (for those of you that like red) Probably too heavy on the pigment still but I think I kinda like it better than the others. Back to the lab as always.

I have been lazy and just messing around mixing colours for months but finally I just started to get on with it. This is part way through. The scroll is not good to use because I made loads of mistakes, but it's good to practice repairs on.

I need to go back to bows and this dodgy scroll was kind of blocking my productivity because I had the fear.

Finished it then got a bit bored and messed around with it a bit to make it look like it was on loan to a school

Anyway this can go in junk box now.

I need to continue on bows and make a different better scroll.

Hello, I am impressed with your scrollery! I wish I was as precise!

Did you use my patented egg yolk or milk based crispygolden pork pie pastry glaze type ground to get that colour and what kind of pastry is the scroll made from, is it a hot water pastry, wholemeal maple flour raised crust scroll?

Seriously I think the scroll looks good enough to eat and the next one will be even better!

Don't worry I am still extremely cavalier about it all

I should try and make an edible scroll, that would actually be pretty cool.

Many thanks, I will try and make things better for the next one

Here is Bow #7 that I have made - Some kind of 17th Century short bow but with a screw mechanism. This time I wanted to use some better materials and put a bit more effort in to it.

Everything was made in my bedroom as I have no workshop.

Materials: Snakewood (Stick) Stabilised Maple (Frog and button)

Weight:  Somewhere around 44g (This is maybe a tiny bit heavier than a normal 17th century bow.

Length: 595mm

Verdict: Well this is my most accurate bow so far. I've not had anyone try it yet but it seems believable. Still a few things to sort out but getting better. My mortices and plugs were much better this time and the hairing itself is a lot better.

If you have any comments let me know.

Love the frog and button. My first thought was that it was some kind of stone, like agate. Until I read your post.

Many thanks.

Yes it is interesting stuff. I have a few different types / colours of this wood at home. Enough to make 40 or so frogs I think.

It's impregnated with resin to stabilise it. It's really easy to work with but a bit brittle because the wood they use is obviously quite knotty.

I bought most of it a years or so ago from either Ukraine or Russia, so I'm not sure if it's possible to get more at the moment.

I made another bow.

Normal size baroque violin bow. 54g.

Stick is snake wood and the frog and button are resin stabilised maple.

I had a bit of an issue with fitting the frog so it didn't go exactly as planned but I will just leave it for now as it's just a prototype anyway.

Other than the frog it the most accurate and straight bow from a cross sectional point of view that I've made.

Ill get someone to try it tomorrow.
