Hey Philip, Fossil Ledges is the name of my shop in Ohio, I'm Dr. Paul Lynn, and since I bring no appreciable skills to MN, I often respond with my own dumb humor...and I like to collect obscure trivia and verbal abuse from VaD!

Or perhaps more succinctly VdA? uh oh, I'm probably in trouble again...and she has those Nihonto pointy sharp thingies...

Now I'm disappointed you're not Dr Phil :D

Oh, that was me you've been talking to?  :P   No problem, anyone with your credentials who settles in Ohio, one should make allowances for.  Anyway, you're an oenologist.  That always has my approval.  :D

Why would it be a Dresden dealer? Why would one call it that? Why then can't it be a Mittenwald?

In the late 19th/early 20th century there weren't any real makers in Dresden except members of the Hammig family. Even these made instruments from Mnk white boxes, but of a much higher quality reg. workmanship, varnish etc. than this one. OTOH every questionable dealer calls a Dutzendware he wants to sell for a higher price than usual Dresden, Leipzig or another Saxony city, just because this sounds better to naive buyers. In fact all this Lowendall, Paulus, Bausch & son, Ackermann und Lesser and alike wheren't doing more than glueing in their labels into the Dutzendarbeiten.

Beside other features the photo of the rib joints is definitely telling us that it can't be Mittenwald. Everybody please might work out for her/himself why.

You think they maybe used hoof-nips for that?

Well, Jakob mentioned that one of the indications of Mittenwald is that the purfling is too deep, but if you cannot tell how deep the purfling is, then how can you use that as an identification feature? Meanwhile, do you agree that it is Mittenwald? Or something else?

It does look like a reasonable instrument to me, but I’ve been trying to learn for 20 years

A feature of Mittenwald violins is that they tend to make the purfling channel to deep. You can see that because the edges in places are in the process of dropping off

Yes, with my limited verbal skills.  My apologies, perhaps I can do the honorable thing and fall on a sword, (western tradition, I'm far too squeamish for disemboweling). The problem with Ohio is that I am a reclusive creature of familiar habits and it is my birth hinterlands. I was raised Plain Quaker and had a speech impediment, if you can wrap your head around THAT childhood. I did go to university in Europe when I was younger. I used to teach wine classes and am a member of Tastingbook. My compulsions drift toward baroque cellos and I own ZERO Juzek violins.

I imagine that Dr. Phil has money, he has a tv job, and he doesn't choose to live in Ohio.

He might have a holiday home by Lake Erie where he stores his Juzek Violins...............

Well..I didn't want to go there, but I have it on good authority he might. And, it goes without saying, that one needs to tread carefully around the Juzek collectors, I mean with the Illuminati connections and all. I just don't want to be a missing person!

Sadly, I can’t tell anything from this photo. Too blurry

That is a classic pinched-rib built-on-back rib join. If you look closely, you can see the joint running right down the center between the two ribs. It is a faint thin dark line. There is also some glue covering it in places.

I understand these things must be kept quiet, also no one should know that Juzek was a distant relative of Antonio Stradivari via Antonio's secret love affair with the widow Gabriella and their subsequent love child little Guido. Poor Guido never really knew his father, but somehow violin making was in his blood. He ventured further into the heart of Europe to find his destiny and never looked back. Praha matka měst!

Actually, when I was reading the vast thread about Deconet(look it up, it’s a fascinating couple hours’ reading) I was comparing the two:

Deconet didn’t REALLY make violins(YES HE DID) because there’s no record of him being a violin maker(THAT DOESNT MATTER. JUST BECAUSE THERES NO RECORD OF HIM MAKING VIOLINS DOESNT MEAN HE DIDNT MAKE VIOLINS.)but he did get Violins from other sources( but not Prague) and put his own label in them and then sell them...not in Venice, but in other areas( but not Metropolitan music.)

Just like John Juzek.

haha made me Laff Laff.

although I’d rather have a Deconet than a Juzek...but that’s just me.

All the disagreement about Deconet/Ongaro/whoever made the damned things obscures the interesting fact that they may be the last violins actually made in the Amati tradition (with that pesky ventral pin everyone is always trying to figure out the purpose of).

Only the Illuminati really know the esoteric purpose of the ventral pin!

And poor little Guido led a tortured youth, never able to claim his Stradivari legacy. Legend says this eventually drove him mad, leading him to construct all of his violins in later years while totally nude.

We all know that nudity is the secret to the sound. No barriers, let everything flow naturally! That one time with the chisel was a close call though.......

shh don't talk about the secret interplanetary gateway!

They usually wrote the operating instructions for the secret interplanetary gateway on the inside of the bellies of the violas where nobody would ever ever look!
