Bow measurements and characteristics

Recommended Posts

If you are listing the attributes of a particular bow what sorts of things would you list?

 I have these:

(In no particular order)

Maker

Stamping

Instrument (in my case violin or viola)

Mass (weight) in grams

Frog and Mounting Materials  (Ebony and Siver, etc.) The style of the eye (if it has one). Style of adjuster maybe. If its a copy of a particular maker/model. Grips/lapping material.

Tip plate material: Silver, Ivory, Bone, Synthetic, etc.

Wood the stick is made out of

Round or Octagonal

Length of the stick without adjuster

Hair length? (I don't know about this)

Provenance and condition.

I know I'm missing something here.  If you have any examples you can point me to I would be grateful.

Thanks,

Dwight

Thanks guys!

ALL very good suggestions.

I went to the National Music Museum web site and looked at their method.  Wow!  They take some measurements!
