Exactly how old do you think that the OPs Grandmother's Uncle might be? When this instrument was new, perhaps 120 years ago, they had trains, and a lot of other transportation. At that time, thousands of these instruments were making it all the way to America. Mittenwald is only 260 miles from Markneukirchen. Not that far! Trade was also very substantial, there are some very interesting documents which show the movement of musical instruments and parts for making them across Europe in the 16th/17th Century.
