Value and Origin of Heirloom Violin

Nowadays, that is correct. However the original comment was that the Violin was acquired many decades ago, when there was less traveling, so It was a reasonable assumption.

Exactly how old do you think that the OPs Grandmother's Uncle might be? When this instrument was new, perhaps 120 years ago, they had trains, and a lot of other transportation. At that time, thousands of these instruments were making it all the way to America. Mittenwald is only 260 miles from Markneukirchen. Not that far! (30 miles less than the distance from Buffalo to Albany)

Please don't make assumptions!

Even back before that travel was not uncommon for those who had the money and the means. Trade was also very substantial, there are some very interesting documents which show the movement of musical instruments and parts for making them across Europe in the 16th/17th Century.
