Boutique violin making wood for sale

Recommended Posts

Okay, so I am being wicked Facetious, ,     ( "Wicked", being a Maine colloquialism)

But I did cut some extremely nice Red Maple flamed backs, violin/viola size.

3 years air dried,

will add pic of planed wedge tomorrow.

This is worth thinking ahead..

BTW, those aren't saw marks, that's the Flame figure, oh yeah.

Why is it called red maple? Because of the colour of the autumn leaves?

The Latin name is Acer rubrum, rubrum = red. The classification was by Carl Linnaeus in the 18th century. Then, names were strictly based on morphology. Fall leaf color was likely a contributing factor, however, flowers, petioles, and twigs tend to be red to various degrees and are more likely to be seen as distinguishing characteristics.

They do have spectacular red and orange foliage in the fall

Also, as I look out my truck window at the early Maine Spring woods, I notice that the fresh buds on the maples are red, and within weeks will burst into green leaves.

Thank you for explaining. Where I live there are no red maples, but I understand it must be good wood, and I think was favoured by Gibson for guitars and mandolins during the glory years.

Haha, I didn't mean to sound brash. I just get excited about wood.

Looks nice, will you be selling these through your website?

Backs are $85, necks $30 and rib block $20

Pick me out one nice tight/straight grained, flamed back and three neck blocks (big enough for viola/ 5 string fiddle).

Please show endgrain pic's of back and neck blocks that you pick out.
