Corona virus in Cremona

Can you give us updates about life in Cremona today because of the virus? My brother has plans to work in Turin soon.

Lack of parts from China will certainly have an affect on the global economy. Some manufacturing plants in China are totally shut down, and others are operating on skeleton crews.

Cremona is semi-deserted these days and there are a number of people with face masks. The only real advantages I have seen is that I don't have to fight for a parking spot and that there are hardly any customers to speak of. This has a positive side because I'm always behind in my work so I've taken advantage of the unusual calm to catch up on the backlog. Museums are closed as is La Scala in Milan. Mostly any place where there are public gatherings have been either closed or restricted. There are supermarkets in Milan where you have to get in line with a mask and wait your turn as they are limiting the number of people in the store at any one time.

All of the intensive care units at the hospital are occupied.

It's amazing to me how fast the virus spread over the globe. The world is getting smaller all the time.

 The situation is a little disturbing, even if so far here in Cremona everything is still quite normal and I still go freely to the bar to drink my coffee

However, these are the limitations foreseen in the city, from a local online newspaper :

 

"Premises closed from 6pm to 6 the following morning, suspension of public events of all kinds, closed schools of all levels (with a stop to school trips), but also the closure of museums and other institutes and places of culture: this is a part of the provisions contained in a Decree of the Lombardy Region, which will be signed in the next few hours and which concerns the so-called "yellow zone", which includes the Cremona area."

Similar restrictions are active in several cities in Northern Italy as well.

The most severe restrictions are in the very few "red zones" where outbreaks occurred, which are completely isolated with checkpoints on the access roads, but in Cremona (and practically everywhere in Italy) people move freely and the situation is not at all dramatic.

I think there is some unjustified panic around, this kind of thing is to be taken very seriously, but it is not the Manzonian plague of 1630.....

However, reading these things from the press always makes a worse impression than reality even to me who am experiencing it, the real perception is not so catastrophic but these situations are constantly changing, we'll see.

I survived the 1957 Asian flu, but remember how bad it was. I had a relapse too. About 69,000 Americans died. That pandemic killed a couple of million worldwide. That H2N2 flu strain was not as virulent as Coronavirus. So, be careful and avoid it.

No, it was Nicolo Amati who survived the plague outbreak and went on to train apprentices from outside the family.

It'd be a good Idea to do pre-emptive shopping for stable goods and food that keeps, get it now to avoid needing to go out of your area gets hit hard....Your already seeing panic buying in Hawaii at the Costco. Get some Iodized salt and vitamic C, bleach, toilet paper basic first aid stuff. You'd like to think that most have this already in place, but most don't

Hand washing is very important and one of the most important things one can do for their own personal health safety.

Regarding wearing masks, just like surgeons what you are doing is preventing others from getting your germs, so even if you are not infected, it is a 'sign" of courtesy to others around you, not really going to prevent you from getting it, but may help you not spread it around if you become a dormant carrier.

What do "we" know about this so far....things that are NOT GOOD.

this has a ridiculous incubation period where one could be walking around infecting others for over 2 weeks showing no signs, it has a ridiculously long life span on objects that have been exposed by infected, things that were held,coughed on, sneezed on are potential dangers, it is areosolized and can therefore transfer into any mucus membrane including the eyes { so touch a shopping cart, rub your eye, get infected} It can be air born and ride on dust, People that were sick and have recovered are relapsing, it is proving very lethal for for the elderly and anyone who may already be sick, it is hitting smokers very hard and complicating pneumonia,it seems to have a tendency to hit leftists who want open borders too :},  the only good news so far is that it seems less lethal to the young

As we see, the market and finance is reacting to the virus and will continue to do so.

Besides the virus itself,panic will be the largest killer in all this. be prepared ahead of time by getting supplied up so you don't have to fight the hordes waiting in line, with potential infected.

This is truly going to be very bad, if you put your mind to it, you can find videos online of whats going on on the ground in China....it's bad as it gets, if this gets foothold in high density low development areas like India and Africa you'll see the death rates dramatically increase.

If you are religious, it'd be a good time to pray, and if your not, it be a good time to hope everything is going to be okay.....In the meantime

Your words remind me of the SARS crisis here in Toronto, Canada and surrounding area back in 2003. That strain was less contagious but more deadly, even killing healthy hospital workers. I'm glad I stopped being a Respiratory Therapist by then.  Southeast Asian and Chinese markets were like ghost towns, but I still frequented my favourite Vietnamese restaurant for Pho and spring rolls.  Now SARS is a distant memory for most of us who lived through the worst of it.

The other dangerous microbes haven't gone away: Norovirus and E.Coli are foodborne and direct-contact spread so be careful what you touch and what you eat when you go out in public.  Wash your hands often and thoroughly.  Remember that humour is the most powerful weapon and the strongest defense in any war.

In the same time period drunk driving and distracted driving will kill and maim more people (like I was) than this virus will - but bad drivers aren't being quarantined.  And we don't need to theorize about who is to blame. Unfortunately, there is no vaccine for human stupidity.  So drive sober and alert.

Keep a positive mental attitude.  Something is going to kill each of us someday - so keep on living life to the very end.  Go to the opera. It ain't over 'till the fat lady sings.

Somewhere you have to stop and think.

If thousands of scientists and doctors, with a public record, goes public and says just about the same thing, and you decides to trust a Dr, that supposedly did things and who said things on a unnamed website without any record of truthkeeping.

It is very sane and extremely good NOT to trust everything you hear on TV, but is even better not to trust odd things in wierd places by strange people.

I had to go shopping at safeway today { a large food store} and now I feel sick, I;m not sure if it's because I've got the plague or because I had to be around a bunch of useless eaters.

If you want survival stats you can do this also by going to safeway, just look at the ratio of idiots who will wait for 30 min in line to get checked out vs. those that are "brave enough" to figure out how to use the self check out and have themselves out the door in 5 min. It really shows you how it is, those that will do for themselves and then those who will wait for someone else to do it for them, you know, like berniebros

I flew into Trieste yesterday and then crossed into Slovenia. People in suits checking temperatures at airport but all seemed OK. I hear that there are short supplies in the border towns but we went to a larger town and all was normal.
