JKMCP
I work in a music store and was recently presented with four violins of varying quality all of which work fine for our rental program. However, one in particular caught my attention, not because I know anything about violins (which I don't) but below the Kloz label is an additional label stating that the violin was "restored" in 1970. So, it's probably already 50 years old, but could it be real? I have no idea, so I now turn to the experts for help. Here are some pics as well... Not great ones but perhaps a start. I understand that it is probably impossible to tell for sure if it's real, but hoping that there will be signs that it is a fake and I can stop spending all the money I would make if it's real! Thanks all for any help/advise you may be able to give. Larry
jacobsaunders
Your violin looks, in a lot of places, as if it were originally of a dark colour, and somebody washed most of the varnish off. Also the damage at the top of the back by the button is a bit critical, and difficult to repair to ones satisfaction. The scroll seems to be from a different maker. All together it seems to have been a quite nice fiddle, albeit not a Klotz, but is now pretty wrecked
JKMCP
Super, thanks for the info, guess I'm gonna have to return the Rolex! thanks again!
Guido
You are new here. When Jacob says "it seems to have been a quite nice fiddle" it would be a reason for most people to get a little excited. I would at least make an effort to understand the situation better (including its poor state) and not subject it to the rental program. It ain't that kind of fiddle. Take it some place knowledgeable in person.
JKMCP
thanks gentlemen for your response. Guido, am I to understand from your post that the instrument is not firewood? It's not suitable for the rental program because it's too far gone for that or it's a better than a rental violin. Sorry for the confusion. here I am in upstate New York, it's almost impossible to find someone knowledgeable to evaluate the instrument which is why I came here. Thanks again folks. Michael Appleman
I'd say it's both too good and too fragile in its current state to put it out as a rental. Upstate NY is not that far from a number of specialist violin shops. This violin is probably worth a few hours drive to show it to someone experienced with this level of violin.
