F. Barbe 1867

Appears to be a lower grade cottage industry instrument with a surprising string combination: Kaplan E string with Obligatos. A Wittner tailpiece would not be my choice either. I have never seen a Barbe in person, but I do not think there is any resemblance. Maybe if I squint at the scroll profile I can see a French chin.  The fluted ffs confuse me.

One should always be wary of fluted fs on revarnished fiddles ...

Why is that?  I play that exact combo as a matter of fact... and I have a Wittner tailpiece.  Very sweet sound, great for recording, not unlike gut, and if you play open e strings (fiddle music, baroque music...), it doesn't whistle, just as advertised.  So, curious why this is so surprising for you.

Obligatos are dark and bold, Kaplans are stark and brilliant, in my opinion. Wittner tailpiece wouldn’t be my choice because they have fine tuners and belong to the dark side (cellos). This is my opinion, like it or not.

Could someone please  explain what "fluted ffs" (or "fluted fs") are? Am guessing it refers to the f-holes, but don't understand what "fluted" means.

Thanks and sorry to ask a dumb question.

Not dumb at all.  It refers to the wings.  A fluted ff-wing is an f-hole wing with a concavity cut into it.  :)

Every day.  Should I expect a surprise?

Just checking.  Around violin enthusiasts, one can't be too careful. ;)

I expect that, sooner or later, we're gonna have a "What is this?" thread pop up next to a "My fiddle's been stolen!", and the two will combine as antiparticles, so to speak.

Violadamore, thanks for for your explanation of fluted f-holes. I did some googling and think I now understand what you wrote. I read through a great 2010 thread  in Maestronet where people like Don Noon were trying to figure out how much the fluting affects the sound. (Results were  inconclusive).  But at least I understand Martin Swan's observation

Fluting means more hands-on-work, so factory instruments wouldn't have it but individually made axes might; so if you took a factory job and carved some fluting prior to revarnishing, people would think it more valuable. Have I got this right? It is difficult for me to believe that anyone  involved with this noble instrument would stoop to such shenanigans, but I am beginning to understand that scams are an ancient and revered part of the violin biz.

Nope, she's comfy in her usual spot.  But Clef Lover got me thinking about going back to the Amber e... hm...
