Vuillaume Copy - Opinions on Condition and Value requested.

Recommended Posts

Hello All,

I'm interested in condition and value of this "Vuillaume" violin. A friend who casually trades instruments has offered it for sale at $550 for my son who's beginning orchestra. There wasn't much background given except it's a shop model and not original and would be a good starter for the next few years.  For reference, the tone is clear on the A and E but a little thin on the G and D, resonance wise, when compared to a $2,500 violin.  There's a sticker inside but no scribbles or signatures. There's a repaired crack on the bass side and another on top under the neck. That area looks like it had the top re-glued but can't be sure about the crack. Lastly, the black on the neck is wearing off so the fingerboard  obviously isn't ebony..

I play mandolin but know next to nothing about violins. Any helpful advice is appreciated.  Thank you.

Looks like a German/Czech trade instrument. Has some condition issues, and probably not well set up. I'd pass, especially for your purpose.
