I personally wouldn't want to buy something like this, but I'm glad that the luthier(s) who replaced it took the trouble to preserve it. There are always neat things to learn from examing little odd bits like this. A friend of mine once showed me some Testore cello corner blocks he saved from a big restoration project. Just the weight and the feel of the wood was totally different from what I expected from hunks of spruce/pine that size, they almost felt like balsa in my hands! Just the effects of aging? Who knows, but in anycase the kind of thing it would be impossible to tell from photos.

It would be interesting to know the provenance. I wonder if the current owner of the violin from which it was allegedly removed gave his permission for it to be sold.

Or is it stolen property?

Stick it in another fiddle to upgrade it to a Strad composite.

It is a relic in the religion of Stradivarius.

It’s actually the true secret of Stradivari - his tailblocks are the real secret behind that gorgeous tone...

Miraculous multiplication and contagious magic strike again.

In the world of collectible toys, there is a unicorn known as the "Boba Fett J-Slot Rocket-Firing Prototype."  Many people actually have the action figure but not the red plastic missile thingy.  Together, this toy can fetch a low end Strad or be a nice down payment for a mid-tier Strad.

Point is, if its a Strad piece, if you can afford it, why not buy it?  I'm a collector of junk and have recently made tidy sums from selling said "junk."

I'd like to hear from someone familiar with Stradivari innards whether they think this piece is, in fact, made by his workshop - the paperwork says that it was removed from a Strad, not that it was original to that violin.

On another note, maybe we should pool our money and make dies to produce Boba Fett's rocket...

As far as whether this fragment came from a Stradivari, I don't know - but if it did it would be interesting because there seems to be no pin for the back

It should be easy to supply provenance for this relic. Without provenance, it should be assumed fake.

Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence.

Well, I think Kevin has nailed it right there... no pins intended... (ok, well, maybe a couple) but no pins, no Cremonese! I don't think anyone can seriously argue out of that particular box. It also looks like there was a fair bit of damage to the bottom rib, if the purfling lines denote where new rib was added. My guess is that if you had to add that much rib, you probably had to replace a block

On the bright side, there is copious amounts of spruce adhered to the top. That could have serious scientific value for analysis samples.... if it's from a Strad...

delGesu has named God on their side already. Who heads your Strad camp?

My thought exactly. What would be the point? To own a piece of wood that Stradavari may have handled?
