No I’m quite sure it’s English. I had a Joseph wade violin very much like it. Il have a certificate next week. I’m hoping for an English violin. But if I’m wrong il say so.

That’s not a Mittenwald notch ”?

I do not know if two piece ribs even needed a notch, but that’s what it looked like.

I didn't mean that it has no varnish at all, just that the coloured varnish was repalced by a transparent.

Of course looking closer I can find no evidence of a formerly different varnish. OTOH the scroll and some other features are having a certain Saxony touch, so that I'm assuming that the violin could have been made in England using prefrabicated Markneukirchen parts and varnished with this transparent coating only. As Jacob has informed us, these parts were broadly sold by Lyon and Healey, wasn't they?

If you have a copy of Meredith Morris he has a great write up in there. I’ve been told it hasn’t been stripped. But looking very closely at the scroll and round the button I’m not sure. The label is original I’m quite sure of that. I love this violin it’s not worth a great deal of money but it’s tone is beautiful and the arching is quite lovely. You probably can’t see the arching and pinch from the photos very well. The golden varnish is the William Heaton Leeds 1895 And then under it is the Joseph wade Leeds 189? The Joseph wade was a very nice violin but quite heavy. J.wade only made 100 violins I have a German violin that is a copy of a j.wade also so for the Germans to fake the violin they must of thought they were half decent.

Every Heaton violin I've seen looked very original in concept and modeling, and also had a very particular treatment of the purfling at the top of the back, which your lacks.
It also seems to lack the signature in the usual place too.
The violin you have looks a lot neater than I have come to expect. All of these points would give me pause for thought.

The idea that they were copying Joseph Wade violins in Germany is somewhat far-fetched. More likely you have a German violin that someone over here put a Wade label into.

Taking this into consideration, at this photo the label looks like bogus with a felt pen written year. But one never knows.

Looking online there seem to be no violin specialists in the city.

I think they are strikingly similar - edgework, corners, button, purfling. Both have the same rather comical "mistake" where the bottom corner on the bass side takes a steeper upward turn than on the treble side  ...

That was Dietrich Kessler, but he has sadly passed away
