Fake Pressenda?

Recommended Posts

This went way over the estimate today. It was one of the most striking looking and perhaps the best sounding out of the entire auction in my opinion, but 55K. The auction doesn't even call it "..an Italian" or "A good violin attributed to..." as some other instruments we described in their titles...

More like $66k. The commission is real. The Curtin went for the same price.

That fake Pressenda was in a league of its own. If I were given the choice between the two I'd definitely take the Pressenda... although 66k seems way too much for an unknown fiddle. I wouldn't pay that for a contemporary instrument either...

Curtin (sic) is alive and well - but I don't think he makes cellos.

He doesn’t. I realized after posting the query that I could just look him up, which I did( I could not, however, find out whether Gregg Alf made cellos) That’s a breathtaking violin and it appeals to me much more than the Zygmuntovich violins I have seen.
