Baylord Posted October 16, 2019 Report Posted October 16, 2019 Hello, I'm new to this forum and could use some help dating and identifying a Violin I recently purchased. It measures about 24 inches in length. The body measures 14 inches and the scroll measures about 4.5 inches. The body is 8.5inches in width At the base and 7 inches at the top. The violin does not have a label and I was wondering if someone could help dating and identifying the violin? Thanks for any help you can provide.
Brad Dorsey Posted October 16, 2019 Report Posted October 16, 2019 Cheap German, 75-100 years old. It has no commercial value in the violin world because the top has been poorly repaired and revarnished.
Wood Butcher Posted October 16, 2019 Report Posted October 16, 2019 Yes, looks German, and would agree that the condition is so poor it is not worth spending much/any money on.
Ratcliffiddles Posted October 16, 2019 Report Posted October 16, 2019 and it looks like it has a replaced front..
Blank face Posted October 16, 2019 Report Posted October 16, 2019 Yes. No purfling and very awkward corners.
Dave Slight Posted October 16, 2019 Report Posted October 16, 2019 The new front doesn't even look like it's made from spruce. Fingerboard is something painted and pinned on, with a wedge underneath disguised as a baroque notch.
