I'm having trouble seeing what your doing, or hearing it from where I'm sitting. Why don't you take it to a music store, luthier, school teacher, or another violin player, who can advise you first hand.

I've recovered between one and ten which had slid all the way down into my cowboy boots. ;)

I had that problem also. I went to a red Speedo and cowboy hat to go with the boots instead of the G string.

Who needs a G string or a Speedo?

Here's an oid photo of Dave, who was at the bench from a very early age. ;)

^^^^^ Could be a photo of my younger brother, Tim, when we were growing up in W. Texas.... FWIW.... the abrasions and resulting calluses lasted well after his legs had lengthen a bit...... hard ass though he was he has mellowed.

Take the string off to see if it has a break hidden in the wound part, or if the end has slipped out of the hole in the peg.  Sometimes they can stay partially wound when this occurs, but turning the peg will have no effect. :)
