My wife wants to know what music he is playing in the first segment.

The first thing that's played is opening of the Tchaikovsky concerto.  What is everybody's favorites?  I like 1 and 6 the most.

But we hear Strads in recordings all the time (albeit usually unidentified). I'd be more interested in a comparison between good violins from different makers.

This was solely for fun. The sound quality of the YouTube video wasn't very good - never mind all the other variables.

They all sounded pretty much the same - that's the best one could conclude...^_^

Big differences to my ears - in volume, tonal character and even-ness across the register

A friend went to the exhibition. I have the catalog,  which is actually quite nice.   Mr. Nakazawa did an excellent job of putting the exhibition on. More Strads live in Japan than I thought.

Did someone say catalogue? Thanks Duane!

Left Click on the pics, then right click on the ones that come up, and pick view image. Some of them can be enlarged from there.

It all started with Rue,,and those nasty Violin nerds.

I can usually find plenty to bitch and bellyache about,, but not these Guys,,,,

I Love'em  Great happy people.

With this array of instruments I feel like I get a sense of the tonal shifts between periods.  The Golden period instruments are generally more focused and projecting while the late period instruments sound more full bodied to my ears.

10M is only a price tag. What is being paid is most likely a different story.

Great young players.

One of them, Fumiaki Miura, got a Strad on loan from the Nippon Foundation.

It is probably the price when they accidently smash one :D

Yes i remember only about 2 Strads being past the 10M mark, the Messie and the Blunt?

Very out of date ....

The Nachez is currently being offered for over $20M

Many have been sold for over $10m

Tarisio only shows the Lady Blunt for 15.9M, and of course the Messiah is an estimate (20M plus). There are soms lists of the most expensive violins (no doubt outdated already),  but it seems mainly DG's were sold for 10M plus.

That’s just publicly searchable auction prices.

Most Strads are not sold at auction!

Not any more.

What I would be curious to know is if all Strads are going now for 10M.

In the end there are some heavily restored Strads and overall condition should in theory kick in when it comes the pricing.
