Kristen Stadelmaier
Hello, I am thinking of purchasing this violin. The seller says it's French from early 20th century. Can anyone tell me about it? There is a small crack on the backside, going up the middle from the chin rest, and the purfling is damaged. How much would this cost to repair? Thanks! Kristen Unless you are yourself a luthier interested in buying what is most likely a mid to late 1800's German violin, with an unusual neck graft onto a through-neck, as a project for your own amusement only, I'd advise against buying it. Kristen Stadelmaier
Thank you!! I'll look elsewhere. The shape looks much different than my 1880 Vogtland violin, and I'm not familiar with many French instruments, so I'm glad I posted here and asked! FiddleDoug
Can't tell that much from the provided pictures, other than that there are some pretty severe problems at both ends of the instrument. Well over $1000 to fix.
