Mmmm - one confused maker....

- one or two too many while carving the scroll...

- couldn't decide whether to make a 4 or 6 string instrument ...

- had an old cello A-string lying around...

- may have fitted a cut-down cello soundpost...

- like the colour of the tailpiece gut.

cheers edi

Are you perhaps confused by the distortion from my phone's lens?  Makes the scroll appear to be very long in 5th image.

Hi Byrdbop - no - not lens distortion. The scroll has been shortchanged 1/2 a turn. The lines seem to go around in "jumps"rather than flow smoothly.

I'm lying down nursing my back - guess I had to take it out on your poor violin. My apologies.

I'm always amazed how our resident experts can narrow down the most likely origin of instruments.

I like the lines of the intact f-hole and the general shape of the body.

cheers edi

Hi Byrdbop,

wanted to know if there was a note stuck in the violin, if there was a violin maker noted and when the violin was made.

PS: a very nice violin

There is a thin remnant of a label remaining but alas print long gone.  It is fully lined and has corner blocks or faux corner blocks.  It's had an interesting life and I intend to care for it until it falls apart.

No, it only looks that way.  Byrdbop saying that, " It really plays rather well ", suggests that the notes are finding their way out of the violin with no difficulty. :lol:

Cool looking old violin, BTW.  Congratulations.  :)

Well the name Byrdbob suggests he's a trumpet player. And if you can play trumpet without annoying the neighbours, a violin should be no problem.

Feel free to rebut my reductive hypothesis.
