I presume a lot of you may already know about this and I hope to see some violinmakers turn out.

I had no idea. And you are coming to Columbus too, to continue looking after the violin in your charge?  We'd like to come say hello to both of you!

I'm gonna try and make a point to venture out to see it. I imagine that this is a rare opportunity to see a piece of history. I'm only a few hours away anyways. I might just "get sick" cough  cough during that week and not be able to go into work.

Yes, I'll be there as well to greet you and look forward to meeting some of the violinmakers I have only come to know through Maestronet (as well as those I already knew). The Ohio Theatre seating capacity is 2,779 for the concert but I imagine it is going to fill up quickly.

I will be there with the Genoa representatives (the Mayor and others) as Columbus is a sister city to Genoa so I may have other things to do on a busy schedule but mostly I should be around the instrument display in the Museum. Bring a small flashlight to better examine the violin but UV lights are not allowed (besides you wouldn't see anything like retouch anyway because all the varnish is original).

If you're there please introduce yourself. I look kind of like this, "Ah, but I was so much older then, I'm younger than that now".  Oh, you mean the violin!!!!

Make a cardboard version of this picture with your head cut out so that all of the violin makers can have themselves photographed holding the Cannon!

I'll just ask here...If anyone is driving thru Kansas City en route to Ohio, and could take on another interesting violinmaking passenger, whom you have heard so much about and would no doubt have a great time with, 99.4% guaranteed, please message me. I probably can't go () but my husband should. He can pay for gas and is a competent driver (despite being from Kansas). Possibly can split a room cost and would be a fantastic roommate. This is kinda an unplanned, unbudgeted thing, but he really has to go. Be aware, he's not nearly as unpleasant as I am, so he has that going for him.

Hi Everyone,

I'm kicking this back to the top just in case someone didn't see it. The only other way is to see the Guarneri 'del Gesù' that was played by Paganini is to travel to Genoa.

I can't imagine anyone is going to fly in from Seattle but when I was back in Michigan a five hour drive Chicago for Kenneth Warren or a ten hour drive to New York to go to Wurlitzers was not unusual.

I'll be there as well and would enjoy meeting any violinmakers or musicians who have come to visit.

It may be pretty much off topic, but does anybody or you, @Bruce Carlson know if it would be possible to listen to the Cannone in concert somewhere in Europe in the near future?

Not too crazy about the elevator music backing up that video, though.  I wonder who selected it.

Could it have been an attempt to soothe the fiddle extremists?  It might be nice if we didn't need to push our way through lines of protesters, to get a look at the danged thing.

My first thought, when I noticed this thread a few days ago was “where the hell is Columbus?” (I’ve found it in my atlas in the meantime), and my second thought was “why on earth does Paganini's DG have to do a victory lap there?” Then I remembered that, when I was a teenage apprentice in Brienz, we did a pilgrimage to Genoa to see the fiddle in the council chamber there. The DG was in a glass case, with a button that one could press to make it turn around (quite fast) with a Vuillaume copy resting at it’s feet. One could see instantly that those stories, that Paganini couldn’t tell the two fiddles apart, were either a fairy tale, or Paganini must have walked around with a very thick white walking stick. What fascinated my Brienz colleagues almost more, was the adjacent glass exhibition case, which displayed Christopher Columbus’s toe nail. Then everything was clear, Columbus Ohio is having a toe nail exhibition, and Bruce is taking the fiddle along for the ride?

Usually on 27 October (Paganini's birth date) there is a concert in the Carlo Felice theatre in Genoa. This year Francesca Dego plays. She has recorded for Deutsche Grammophon.

I have yet to see the toenail but who knows, maybe it's a surprise. That's funny. We used to say "where the hell is Brienz?"

Looking forward to seeing you David. Hope you make it. Must be over three hours from Ann Arbor for a normal auto but if yours is as fast as it looks the Ohio State Highway Patrol might not even see you!!

No, only Columbus, as it is part of the sister city cultural exchange program. Then it goes back to Genoa.

Already have. Last week the state of Maine just changed the Columbus day holiday to "Indigenous peoples day" which has made our native population about 0.0001% happier about their treatment over the years.

I'm from Columbus area.  True, we got lucky with the Sisters City program and the Cannone.  We used to joke about our city being a "cow town".  Not any more.   The city is growing fast in many different ways, all positive.  There are reasons why we made the top 20 for the Amazon HQ2.   Also our local violin shop The Loft is second to none with people that have been committed to instruments since the 1970's.

I will be there a few days, including the concert.  Look forward to meeting you.  I have never made a copy of the Cannon, only other later ones mostly the Sauret and Ysaye.  This will be a great motivation .
