wooden
Hello. I found this unvarnished area in a violin. It seems a little clumsy... Is this usual in any violin making school?Or is it found everywhere? Thanks in advance.

HoGo
Looks like someone bought white violin and varnished it without removing the board. You can see where the sanding block (or perhaps scraper) reached at the end of board.
jacobsaunders
I have never recorded a statistic, but I believe that most old violins are not varnished beneth the fingerboard
kevin Prestwich
I don’t varnish under the fingerboard but I do darken it considerably. The end result being less varnish on the top and having one varnish free area seems to allow the top to vibrate a bit more freely and a bit differently than If coated edge to edge. I do apply my ground and sealer coat there.

Edward Byler
So you guys don’t remove the board to varnish ? I’m thinking of doing that because I’m tired of all the varnish touch up on the sides of the neck . Maybe next time .....

I wrapped a lint-free cloth (old linen napkin) around a pallet knife to varnish under the board. Easy as can be. I don't plan on temporarily gluing FBs any more. Janito
I don't nail the neck to the body, I don't use a laminated fingerboard and...I don't leave areas unvarnished.
