Anyone else seeing this as an H. Derazey

How does one keep up with all of the violin listings on eBay and notice certain things like this. Seems like there are thousands of old ones for sale. It is interesting to do, but how to keep up seems overwhelming.

Now that you mention it, I feel very queasy.  Do I have a problem?

I wasn’t directing the question towards you specifically. It just seems that a lot of interesting finds (good and bad) pop up here and it seems like looking for a needle in a haystack.  It’s good entertainment though.

Two piece bottom rib as far as I can tell. Rib joints may have been filed back.

Scroll doesn't look like MKN other than the blackening on the inside.

Probably futile of me to speculate without having any idea what the inside  looks like.

He says the back length is 357mm which seems short for a French violin.

The H.Derazey stamp looks quite good, better than some obvious fake ones. Is it original, or was it somehow stamped through the f-hole ?

The label does not appear to be pixelated like a laser copy would be.

To my eyes it looks to be outside mold and not BOB.

It's a long time since I looked at Ebay but a few years back I had reason to study this seller quite carefully. This is a typical product - the tops are taken off to put in brands. I think some of the brands may be genuine but they don't belong in the violins

The heavy rolled edges seem to feature on most of the violins s/he sells ...

There is unfortunately a huge trade in this sort of crap originating from the South of France.

All features like rib construction, edges and purfling and last but not least the unmisunderstandable scroll are pointing to a rather nicely made Markn./Schönb Dutzendarbeit ca. 1900. IMO it's not to understand why it isn't offered as such, it could fetch as good a price as with this criminal crooked activities (given that the condition is right).

Not surprising. There is / was also a big trade in fake 18th century furniture from this area and from Italy. Antique furniture is not as popular as it used to be.

For visitors not familiar with this site: Blank face is an expert , particularly in German/ Bohemian etc instruments, and I imagine most other areas as well.

I on the other hand am a dilettante.

If you’re a dilettante, that makes me an artsy fartsy tenderfoot.

My remark about the scroll wasn't aiming at your comment, which I probably didn't read carefully enough:unsure:. Of course there are different grades of quality in scroll carving (depending of the period, too) and this is a rather good one, so maybe not that really typical.

Also the actual price is higher than what I expected for such an obviously manipulated instrument, but I'm doubting that it's real bidding. Ilooked at it as it was at 400 and something.
