No, I'm not worried about my own work. I am worried about the nonsense people talk about violins in general. When you hear an "amazing sounding instrument" it's always attached to an amazing player. That is not a coincidence.

The amazing player surely will reject and has rejected a lot of violins, because they don´t sound fine - but naturally nearly all of them will sound like violins in any way.

Yes they all sound kinda violiny. But there are so many factors involved in that choice. Emotional, financial etc.

Who is going to turn down the chance to be loaned a famous instrument?

No virtuoso will play a beautiful sounding and looking istrument by an unkown Chinese maker, they would lose credibility. Commercial reality. Silly, but true.

Obviously you are unable to give a more precise definition what you're talking about at all. No wonder, because this is possible only when leaving out all context, all real making and all historical evidence. That's what I would define (lending Jacobs words) as "verbal diarhoea", born of desperation and some intoxication of unknown origin.

I just started to have some pity - one person fighting alone for a lost case, in despair, cornered, weak and embarrassed:unsure:.

Oh, don´t worry : I only see here the "little club" in contradiction to great experts, museum - curators, National library-documents etc.    I myself feel in fine company !

One could resume your idea as

" There are no bad violins, but only bad players "   -  correct ?!

Martin Swan

- No abilities in making

- Not any or at the best quite poor abilities in playing ( a torture for any violin in your hands )

- but considerable experience as DJ

Not having any real access to the violin - family, you naturally are not able to recognize any functional or aesthetical dimensions in these instruments. But at least it is great qualification for the "little club" !

I have never knowingly DJ-ed in my life

I am a relatively OK player of traditional repertoire, in certain circles even considered quite acceptable ... but primarily my musical life has been as a producer/composer, recording many CDs of my own projects and producing and engineering for other artists, as well as huge amounts of TV and commercial scores.  These days I amuse myself by playing traditional Croatian music with Croatian friends.

Unsurprisingly, none of the well-known professionals I have sold instruments or bows to have had your small-minded approach. They are more concerned with my general musicality and listening ability than with how I play. After all, I am selling them something for them to play, not me ...

All I need to be an honest and respectable dealer is to know instruments, to know how to value them correctly, to understand the needs of my clients, and to approach these clients with integrity. I'm quite satisfied that I do all this.

That's the reason why my name is next to my posts and yours is not.

I pretty sure he can speak and write perfect English. But why would he bother to go to such lengths to write pidgin English to pretend he isn't the poster formally known as Carl Stross (not his real name either)?

Carls native language wasn't English either. I often found him ammusing though!

The same applies for me, there is much better way of spending time than discussing with third-rank-makers like you - I will stop this waste of time.

If you'd like to continue here, please consider an attitude adjustment. While I don't excuse inappropriate responses by others, it seems to have a propensity to attract these types of responses. Try being less of a target please.

Is that your best trolling attempt?

Whatever happened to Carl Stross?

Back from holiday? We just had a little party.:)

I guess when I'm working extra-long days it might seem like I'm on "vacation" judging by this site.  In this case, I was spared seeing the the thread's decline  into the abyss (got it in a single dose) and I got some work done, so I suppose there are silver linings.  :)
