Jeffrey Holmes Posted December 16, 2018 Report Posted December 16, 2018 Please, please, avoid the temptation to glue the top plate to the blocks using Bondo, fortified with linen cloth... especially on an otherwise nice instrument. It is not a suitable replacement for replacing lost wood and the blobs of Bondo look really sick when they budge out onto the blocks. I used many four letter words that I'll not repeat here while separating the mess... Thank you. I feel just a little better now.
deans Posted December 16, 2018 Report Posted December 16, 2018 Caught me just in time. Should I try some Devcon steel putty instead?
PASEWICZ Posted December 16, 2018 Report Posted December 16, 2018 ...geez, everyone knows the bondo should be fortified with carbon fiber....amateurs!

Jeff White Posted December 16, 2018 Report Posted December 16, 2018 That's what you get for working on Sunday.....................................
Violadamore Posted December 16, 2018 Report Posted December 16, 2018 [Considers who on MN might be most likely to also be working on vintage cars.] Did you get it from Burgess?

The Violin Beautiful Posted December 16, 2018 Report Posted December 16, 2018 This is stirring up awful memories of a violin I had to fix up. The top was rather thin, so someone had “fixed” it by covering the inside with a generous application of Bondo. He also installed a bass bar so tall that it nearly touched the back. Some of the Bondo had made its way into the open cracks, which he didn’t see as a problem. I spent a lot of hours undoing all that damage. Maybe it was done by the same person. I just hope there aren’t more violins out there like that.

Who around here is working on old cars? I am very fond of them and have owned several, but when I got married my wife suggested that I get rid of the several that remained incomplete...oh well.
FiddleDoug Posted December 17, 2018 Report Posted December 17, 2018 Would a couple of drywall screws be ok for you?

Saw a nice fiddle with edging on the top "fixed" with bondo and it had a dark blackish colour. Uggh, it looked somehow repulsive. I love bondo for the boats I made for my kids, now for the grandkids. Have used it with fibre glass. You have to work pretty fast if it's warm out. I forgot about it the last time , mixed too large a quantity and had to throw some of it out. Stuff is pretty expensive now. You can dilute the rosin with acetone.
jezzupe Posted December 17, 2018 Report Posted December 17, 2018 Hey man caulking and paint makes us what we ain't

Janito Posted December 17, 2018 Report Posted December 17, 2018 Looks like Jeffrey's hands got bonded to the fingerboard
CSchabbon Posted December 17, 2018 Report Posted December 17, 2018 That must have been a fast worker if he managed to mix the bondo, slap it on the top, add the linen and clamp it all on the ribs in only 6 minutes! I'm impressed.

Dwight Brown Posted December 17, 2018 Report Posted December 17, 2018 Thank god he didn't have the rest of the 3M catalog! DLB
ClefLover Posted December 17, 2018 Report Posted December 17, 2018 No bondo on the edging? What we supposed to use then, plastiwood!?

luthier Posted December 17, 2018 Report Posted December 17, 2018 I opened a nice trade instrument and found someone had applied a very thick coat of hide glue to the entire inside. What was he/she thinking?%&^*(*$#@
